International applicants are encouraged to apply. Position Description The University of Guam Marine Laboratory and the Guam Center for Biodiversity Research are seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to join a multidisciplinary team focused on advancing marine biodiversity monitoring using environmental DNA (eDNA) approaches, including metabarcoding and quantitative PCR (qPCR). The successful candidate will contribute to marine biodiversity surveys and the development of eDNA-based monitoring strategies in tropical marine ecosystems. Primary responsibilities include collection and processing of water, sediment, and Autonomous Reef Monitoring Structure (ARMS) samples for eDNA analyses, as well as molecular laboratory work including DNA extraction, qPCR assays, sequencing library preparation, and metabarcoding workflows. The position will support project objectives including: - Detection and monitoring of scalloped hammerhead sharks using qPCR approaches; - Broad-scale marine biodiversity assessments and invasive species detection using metabarcoding; and - Development and evaluation of eDNA-based biodiversity assessment and targeted monitoring strategies. Additional responsibilities include: - Assisting with field deployment, recovery, and processing of ARMS units; - Leading or contributing to technical reports, manuscripts, and project documentation; - Supporting molecular laboratory organization and management; - Coordinating with administrative and grants personnel to procure laboratory reagents, supplies, and equipment; - Assisting with biodiversity and ARMS-focused workshops and training activities; and - Supporting additional eDNA and biodiversity survey activities associated with field programs in Guam and the broader Mariana Islands, including potential travel to Saipan and Tinian. Preferred Qualifications - Ph.D. in molecular ecology, marine biology, environmental science, genetics, bioinformatics, or a related field; - Experience with eDNA workflows, metabarcoding, qPCR, or molecular biodiversity assessments; - Experience conducting fieldwork in marine or aquatic environments; - Strong organizational and communication skills; - Ability to work independently and collaboratively in interdisciplinary research settings.
