Postdoc: UTexas.Austin.Evolution_Genomics_Mitochondria
The Havird Lab at the University of Texas at Austin is looking for an enthusiastic and motivated postdoctoral researcher. Our group is generally focused on the evolution, genomics, and physiology of mitochondria. We are especially interested in researchers that will contribute to an ongoing project examining the role of mitonuclear interactions and incompatibilities at species boundaries, but are also open to independent research aligned with interests of the lab. Ongoing projects in the lab examine coevolution between mitochondrial and nuclear genomes, molecular evolution of organellar genomes, the roles of mitochondrial processes in health/disease, and ecophysiology/environmental adaptation. Multiple organismal systems are used in the lab, including microbes, plants, and animals, as well as making use of existing publicly available genomic datasets.
Desirable experience/interests include:
- Genomic sequencing/assembly techniques and GWAS-type approaches
- Biochemical assays of mitochondrial function and metabolic rate (e.g., seahorse, O2K)
- Examining environmental adaptation via molecular and physiological approaches
- Broad intellectual interests and enthusiasm for addressing evolutionary questions
- Motivation and ideas for seeking independent postdoctoral funding
- Mentoring of undergraduate researchers
- A desire to foster a positive, fun, and collaborative research environment
 
Our lab uses large sequencing datasets in many projects, so previous experience in bioinformatics is strongly desired.
We are part of the growing Integrative Biology Department at the University of Texas, which has strengths in evolution, genomics, and ecology. Postdocs should therefore expect a large network of colleagues and collaborators across campus.
