Research Position Available Project: Testing Temporal Genomic Shifts in Exploited Fish Populations Using Ancient and Environmental DNA (ATRAE Programme; Ref. ATR2023-144170, funded by MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033) We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher (Doctor FC3) to join an interdisciplinary project investigating temporal genomic shifts in exploited Atlantic salmon populations using ancient and historical DNA (OLDSALMO). The project is based at the ACUABIOTEC Lab, Institute of Marine Research (IIM-CSIC), Vigo, Spain. OLDSALMO is a four-year project funded by the ATRAE programme that uses Atlantic salmon as a model species to develop novel approaches for assessing the roles of overfishing and climate change in population declines. More information is available at: https://oldsalmo.csic.es. This is a one-year position, starting in January 2027. Requirements Applicants should hold a PhD in molecular ecology, population genomics, or a related discipline. Experience working with degraded DNA (ancient or environmental) and/or aquatic systems is desirable but not essential. The role The successful candidate will analyse existing ancient genomic datasets to investigate temporal changes in salmon populations, while also generating and analysing historical genomic and phenotypic data and relating these to environmental change. We are looking for an enthusiastic, collaborative, and adaptable researcher who is keen to learn new skills while contributing their own expertise to the project. The successful candidate will work closely with two PhD students based at IIM-CSIC and collaborate with researchers at Swansea University, the University of Cantabria (EvoAdapta & IIIPC), Harvard University (Reich Lab), the Regional Government of Cantabria (Dirección General de Montes y Biodiversidad), and the University of Vienna (Gelabert Lab). The postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for: - Generating and analysing genomic data. - Preparing manuscripts for publication. - Presenting project results at national and international conferences. - Participating in outreach and dissemination activities. - Contributing to the co-supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate students. How to apply To apply, please send your CV and a cover letter to Prof. Sofía Consuegra at sconsuegra@iim.csic.es. Application deadline: 14 August 2026 Interviews will be held online via Zoom during the first week of September 2026. (to subscribe/unsubscribe the EvolDir send mail to evoldir@evoldir.net)
